Technical director to act as Flames coach
by: Oris Chimenya, 1/4/2005, 11:33:32 AM

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said following the delay in the appointment of the national coach, the technical director will be acting as the national team mentor until a coach is employed.
Fam president Walter Nyamilandu said this at a press conference held at Mpira House in Blantyre on Monday where he also outlined the body’s ten resolutions for 2005.
Nyamilandu said the local technical director’s name will be announced in two weeks time. He said the association does not want to employ an expatriate technical director.
“We prefer the local one because he is knows all the problems Malawi football faces. He will go into the villages to look for talent in conjunction with the regional and district football committees,” said Nyamilandu.
On the issue of national team coach, Nyamilandu said it was not known when exactly a full time mentor would be employed.
The Flames take on Tunisia in a return leg of the World Cup and Africa Nations Cup joint qualifier to be played in Tunis at the end of March.
“It is difficult to give you an exact date for the employment of the coach, but the cushion is that the system will not stop because the technical director will take care of the Flames in the interim period,” he said.
Nyamilandu, who has been in office for 53 days now, also said the association has finalised the selection process of the technical director and is currently discussing with the potential candidates their salaries and perks.
He said in addition to acting as national team coach, the director, who will be sent to the United Kingdom for a refresher course, will also be responsible for the facilitation and coordination of various training programmes in all Fam affiliates and other stakeholders.
But isn’t this too late a preparation considering that the opponents are busy preparing for the clash?
Answered Nyamilandu: “A coach for the national team will be appointed in good time and given necessary support to build a strong national team. I strongly believe that though we are at the bottom of the table, we stand a chance to qualify for Africa Nations Cup if we plan properly for the remaining home and away games.”
Among other new year resolutions Fam says it is planning to employ a finance and administration director, marketing and public relations director, form new subcommittees for audit, players, marketing and medicine and also engage in income generating activities.
