MTL Wanderers and Zimbabwean top-notch outfit Caps United’s director and owner Twine Phiri on Monday put on ice talks involving midfield maestro Joseph Kamwendo’s prospective deal apparently because the lad failed to attend the meeting having gone to his home in Mchinji.
Kamwendo left for Mchinji at the weekend in very controversial circumstances and he declared that he had quit the nomads.
But the two clubs still held a successful meeting regarding the memorandum of understanding which was signed almost a year ago in areas like finance generation, technical cooperation and commercialisation drives.
Nomads’ chair Sydney Chikoti said soon after the meeting held at Ryllas Hotel in Blantyre that the issue of Kamwendo was mentioned in passing.
“Joseph is not in town, he left without telling us where he had gone and much as he is our player, we cannot proceed with talks in his absence and we are making arrangements that he should be available when we meet again.
“As a club, we still value him very much but it will depend on a number of factors like getting his parents’ consent and we also have to hear the player’s views as well. Hopefully we will have another meeting before Mr. Phiri returns to Harare,” said Chikoti who was accompanied at the meeting by an executive member James Chuma.
Chikoti said the meeting was arranged mainly to discuss the memorandum of understanding which the two clubs signed on December 30, 2003.
“The main issue was about the relationship between the two teams. Since we are a new executive we just wanted to find out what is contained in the memorandum of agreement and it was a very fruitful meeting,” added Chikoti.
Chikoti also said it was clarified during the meeting that bow-legged midfielder Haji Tambala, who has gained a rich vein of form with the Harare-based giants will play for two seasons under a term of reference in the agreement which states that “the two clubs will exchange players and at no cost at any point that the transfer window of either country is open for the specific period agreed upon by the two clubs.”
On his part Phiri also described the meeting as beneficial and said the new nomads’ executive is very understanding.
“I am absolutely certain that I will have a good working relationship with these gentlemen,” said Phiri.
The wealthy Caps boss also said he is optimistic that he will have registered three Malawian players with his team namely Tambala, Kamwendo and Peter Mponda for the Caf Champions League by the end of the month.
Meanwhile in a dramatic development, Silver Strikers, who are on an ambitious recruitment drive, are reported to be in a desperate bid to sign Mponda.
Apart from Mponda, the bankers are also reported to be interested in former Flames’ veteran goal tender Navigator Dzinkambani. Silver held discussions with the two players on Friday in Lilongwe.
“They were met on arrival by Silver’s vice chair Patrick Uka and were taken to Silver Club in Area 47 for discussions,” said an inside source.
Mponda, who is involved in a row with his former club Bakili Bullets, confirmed meeting Silver officials but said nothing concrete has come up yet.
“It is true that I travelled to Lilongwe where I met Silver officials but I have not made any commitment because of my prospective move to Caps. What I can say is that I will weigh the offers,” said Mponda who also met Phiri at Ryllas Hotel later on Monday.
