5 MBC employees arrested

Police last Friday arrested five Malawi Broadcasting Corporation workers in Lilongwe for allegedly swindling the state broadcaster of K7 million ($64,814).
The five, a cashier Nattion Luhanga and four advertising officers Josephine Chizimba, Emmanuel Kaliyeka, Eunice Ndlovu and Kenedy Marichi were arrested after a dubious bank account they are alleged to have opened was discovered.
Police spokesperson Willie Mwaluka confirmed the arrests on Monday, saying the five will be appearing in court soon. But he could not divulge more details as he was out of office.
But other police sources close to the investigations alleged the five opened up an account in December last year which they called MBC Beneficiary Fund.
“They used to deposit into this account MBC cheques collected from clients who place advertisements with the radio and the money amounted to K7 million,” a police source alleged.
MBC spokesperson Edith Tsilizani confirmed the arrests at the Lilongwe office.
“Its true that some of our colleagues have been picked by police but I cannot comment much because the issue is in the hands of the police and my comments might jeopardise investigations,” she said.
