TV Malawi under probe

Fiscal Police are investigating Television Malawi (TVM) for alleged diversion of funds from donors and well-wishers meant for the state-run broadcaster.
According to inside sources, the probe has targeted the station’s business department which is mandated to source funds from donors and other well-wishers to assist in the running of the financially troubled station, which mainly depends on government subvention.
Head of Fiscal Police Michael Namwera on Thursday confirmed the probe but said he could not divulge more information since the officer conducting the investigations was away in Lilongwe for a funeral.
“All I know is that there is a case involving more than one person. Unfortunately the file on the investigations is with the officer who is handling the case,” he said.
Police Headquarters in Lilongwe were on Thursday reluctant to comment on the issue as spokesperson Willie Mwaluka said he has to be given time to find out from his Blantyre colleagues.
“Probably I can have the answers by tomorrow,” he said.
TVM acting director general Victor Mphande on Thursday said he was not aware of the probe.
“We haven’t been told anything on that, probably there is such a probe but I am not aware of it,” said Mphande.
Two months ago, the Anti-Corruption Bureau zeroed in on the state-run station and arrested director general Rodrick Mulonya on alleged corruption charges. Mulonya is currently on bail.
