Sunshine nearly steal show in Zimbabwe

DD Sunshine women football club nearly stole the show in the Zimbabwean town of Marondera, where it reached the final of a two-day football tournament organised by mayor of the town recently.
Sunshine’s coach and director David Dube said the final match pitted the Malawian side and Mufakose. He said the two teams played a goalless first half before Mufakose broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half.
Thandi Kasiya equalised for Sunshine but the hosts stretched their lead to 3-1 following blunders by the captain Chisomo Kazisonga.
Sunshine’s free kick specialist Lina Chipili made sure the Malawian lost with a respectable 3-2 margin by converting an injury time free kick.
Dube said the tournament involved three other Zimbabwean sides Queens Marondera Select and Eastern Region Select and was played on league basis with the top two reaching the final.
“We had our first game against Mufakose on December 4. Mufakose is one of the best women football teams in Zimbabwe, contributing about six players to the Zimbabwe national women football side, which walloped Malawi 5-1 during the 2002 Cosafa women football tournament.
The game ended 2-2 with Chipili and Thandi Kasiya finding the target for us,” narrated Dube, who showered a lot of praise on defender Kazisonga (captain) and goalkeeper Alice Msiska for soaking up heavy pressure from the hosts.
According to Dube, the game was beamed live on Zimbabwe Television.
After holding Mufakose, he said the team went on to hammer Marondera 6-1 in the same afternoon.
“The following day, we played Eastern Region Select without five key players, whom we were reserving for the final. We beat them 11-1.”
“One of the things that we learnt from this tour is that our friends enjoy a lot of coverage from the media. While our women think they can do it a lone, their counterparts in Zimbabwe have a man from the television station in their committee. This is the one, who assists them in coverage of their events,” Dube said.
