Bakili Bullets’ failure to seal coach Kinnah ‘Electric’ Phiri’s contract might cost the club dearly as Zimbabwe’s flagship league champions Caps United are waiting in the wings to pounce.
The Bullets agreed with Kinnah on a two-year contract but the former botched up the deal by not giving him a solid contract.
“An agreement was reached with the club just before I took up the job that I would be offered a two-year contract but surprisingly the officials came back to me later on to say I would be on probation for six months.
“Then after the six months had elapsed, I reminded the club about the need to sign a contract but instead they did not come up with something solid and I refused to sign. They came up with something more of an agreement than an actual contract.
“As of now I have not yet signed the contract and I am waiting for the new executive to get into office so that they can prepare a fresh contract,” explained Kinnah on Thursday.
He also confirmed reports that Caps United have approached him unofficially to consider a new lease of life with the Harare-based giants.
“I have been approached unofficially by Caps’ owner and director Twine Phiri to consider a move to Caps but I have to sort out the issue with Bullets first regarding my contract.
“To be honest with you my loyalty is to the sponsor of Bakili Bullets former president Bakili Muluzi, I already briefed him during our meeting sometime back that I would be with the team for two years,” he explained.
The country’s all-time soccer great said he has already booked an appointment with the former president to discuss the issue of his contract.
“After the meeting with the sponsor I will then be able to make a decision on the way forward,” he said.
Caps’ Twine confirmed in a telephone interview from Harare that he is indeed seriously interested in getting the services of Kinnah.
“We will be participating in the Caf Champions League from early next year and we have come up with ambitious plans. Obviously when you want to do well, you have to invest and I have seen what Kinnah is capable of doing.
“He took Bullets into the last eight of the Champions League and we feel he can perform the same magic for Caps,” said Phiri who has Malawian roots.
Twine said he will be coming to Malawi soon for a meeting with Kinnah and to follow-up the issue of Peter Mponda. Caps already has a Malawian player former MTL Wanderers midfielder Haji Tambala who is doing well for the Zimbabwean champions.
