Escom ignorant of Bingu’s claims

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (Escom) has distanced itself from remarks made by President Bingu Wa Mutharika at Nkula Station last month that some political leaders are paying some youths to sabotage power in the country.
Controller of Security Services Baxter Namwali said on Wednesday Escom is not aware of any leaders trying to sabotage power supply in the country.
“Since we are juniors we cannot comment anything on what the President said. As the President of this country he has his own ways of getting these people,” said Namwali.
But chief secretary in the office of the president and cabinet Bright Msaka said that investigations are going on despite Escom’s remarks that they do not know anything.
“We are still investigating and when the suspects are arrested you will definitely be the first people to know,” said Msaka.
Police spokesperson Willie Mwaluka said the police has made arrests but could not link the arrests to any leaders as claimed by Mutharika.
Meanwhile, Malawi Congress Party second vice president, Nicholas Dausi has said it remains to be seen whether what the President was talking about was indeed a criminal case or he was just making political statements.
“The head of state has information from different stakeholders, so if he has evidence, why can’t he just arrest the suspects instead of making political statements,” said Dausi.
Escom has been hit massive vandalism which has resulted into loss of transformers, overhead lines and transmission powers in the two major cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe.
Between April 1 and September 30, 2004, the company lost 104 transformers valued at over K32 million ($296,296).
