The police have arrested five people, four of them children of UDF and former President Bakili Muluzi’s strong supporter, Mayi Hawa Sineki, for allegedly beating up the party’s women who wanted to welcome president Bingu wa Mutharika at Kamuzu International Airport on Friday.
Police deputy public relations officer Kelvin Maigwa confirmed in an interview that Zainab Sineki, Violet Sineki, Charity Sineki, Ndaona Sineki and Gracian Kamphanje have been arrested for allegedly beating up some UDF women, including Esnat Banda a district party official.
Maigwa said the five were still in custody at Kawale police in Lilongwe as of Monday afternoon and were awaiting to be taken to court to answer charges of common assault.
However, Maigwa couldn’t be drawn to comment on why the five had beaten up the woman, saying the police are only interested in the crime that was committed.
But a police source said Banda told them “she was severely beaten for putting on the party’s clothe with Mutharika’s picture”.
According to the source, the five, one of whom is a UDF ward councillor, asked her why she was betraying Muluzi by wearing a clothe with Mutharika’s portrait when she was aware that Muluzi was the chairman of the party.
Efforts to speak to Mrs Sineki on whether she is happy with what her children reportedly did proved futile Monday because her mobile phone was out of reach.
