Football Association of Malawi (Fam) newly elected president Walter Nyamilandu and Flames’ Russian-based prolific marksman Essau Kanyenda on Saturday walked down the aisle at lively wedding ceremonies held in Blantyre and Mponela respectively.
Nyamilandu got wedded to Television Malawi (TVM) personality Rehana Surtee at Limbe Cathedral Church and a stirring rave-up followed at Portuguese Club, only a stone’s throw from his former Wanderers club. Kanyenda, 25, tied the knot with his sweetheart Queen Chibwana-Nkhata at Kapaza CCAP Church in Mponela followed by a colourful reception held at Tobacco Association of Malawi (Tama) hall.
The giant new Fam boss put his daunting task of cleaning up Fam’s battered image on hold, to officially wed his long-time fiance and could not hide his delight as he imposingly strolled into the jam-packed hall with his spouse after being chauffeur driven to the club in a C-class grey Merc.
Elegantly dressed in a navy-blue suit, a trendy white groom’s evening waistcoat, a maroon bow-tie and sporting a single red rose in his lapel, Nyamilandu dispatched a good grin in all directions.
The wife, sporting a dazzling white floor-length evening bride’s gown, was also on cloud nine and her TV trademark ice-cool composure and radiant smile, were very much in abundance.
Visibly floating on air, Nyamilandu said he felt on top of the world.
“Today I have been greatly honoured and I am the happiest man because I have a family,” said the Fam boss.
Asked how it has been like to prepare for a wedding while at the same time campaigning for Fam presidency, Nyamilandu cleared his throat and simply said: “It’s been quite wearisome, however, I should thank all those who were involved in the organisation of the wedding, they did a very good job.”
The guests were treated to a sumptious dinner and later on the new couple gave out gifts to the guests. Nyamilandu’s long-time pal Hannock Ng’oma, who is also MTL Wanderers general secretary, was the best man while Carol Kay-Saccur, was the maid of honour.
Mponela Trading Centre is also reported to have come to a standstill as hundreds of adoring well-wishers lined-up the main road to take a glimpse of Kanyenda and his spouse as the wedding convoy drove to Tama hall at snail’s pace.
The Rostov hitman, who was smartly dressed in a greyish-brown suit, a white shirt and an up-to-date gold necktie, waved at the well-wishers while smiling broadly from a white C-class Merc.
“This is one of my greatest day, it is the day I have been looking forward to. I am happy that I have finally married the queen of my heart,” said Kanyenda in an interview later on.
The robust forward also said he is looking forward to a much better performance in the forthcoming Russian season because he will be taking his wife and son, Nathan, to Rostov.
“I will now be much more focussed on my game because I’ll have my family with me,” said Kanyenda.
He disclosed that there were times when his game was greatly affected because he missed his family.
Kanyenda’s manager Ben Chiwaya booked the newly-wedded couple a suite at Capital Hotel where it spent a night. The new family is expected to leave for Mangochi today for their honeymoon.
Chiwaya said Kanyenda and his family are expected to leave for Russia next week.
