Bakili Bullets’ boss Hassam Jussab has said it was impossible for the club to use only K3 million ($27,778) during the just ended season as per sponsorship agreement with former president Bakili Muluzi because it was far on the lower side.
The Bullets used Muluzi’s K15 million sponsorship meant for five years in just over a season.
Jussab stressed on Thursday that K3 million would not have been enough taking into account that over K26 million was spent in the just ended season.
“Apart from the sponsor’s K15 million sponsorship, you can see that we had to spend an extra K11 million to meet the costs of running the club,” said Jussab who produced a copy of the club’s income and expenditure accounts.
According to the list, about K5.1 million was used for game bonuses and training allowances, K2.4 million was used to settle food and camping expenses while K5 million went towards players furniture.
The accounts report further indicate that about K1.8 million was used for wages and salaries and K3.3 million was used for recruiting players.
The Bullets further coughed over K3 million to meet house rentals and transport costs and a further K900,000 for accommodating South African Premier League side Jomo Cosmos.
He listed the other expenses as: K805,000 players’ signing-on fees, K532,000 registration of players, K450,000 ground rent, K308,476 legals costs, K304,000 interest payable, K106,378 medical expenses, K452,743 for buying a vehicle, K22,178 post rentals, K322,000 on sports equipment, K65,000 telephone allowances, K20,000 withholding tax, K299,500 terminal benefits and K1,200 on stationery.
“All this is properly documented and the accounts will be taken to certified accounts for auditing. It’s not like the money was misused as other quarters would want the sponsor and fans to believe,” said the Bullets boss.
And in a dramatic development, Jussab who a couple of weeks announced that he would not seek re-election, has made a dramatic U-turn.
“A group of supporters and players came to see me on Saturday last week and asked me to seriously reconsider my decision to quit and I told them that I’ll have to think about it and then consult my advisors, family and friends.
“And after wide consultation and a huge amount of thought, I have decided to stand. I will compete with Salim Bagus and others who might want to contest for the position of chairmanship,” said Jussab.
Quizzed on whether his change of mind has been influenced by Muluzi’s decision to continue sponsoring the club, Jussab said: “While I appreciate the former state president’s gesture, it is my love for the team that has forced me to change my mind,
“I have run this club before when it had no sponsor and I have nothing to fear. I have been chairman for the past four years in which we have swept almost all silverware and I want continue,” said Jussab.
