Muluzi to continue sponsoring Bakili Bullets
by: Garry Chirwa, 11/30/2004, 8:51:38 AM

Former president Bakili Muluzi on Monday finally gave his word to Bakili Bullets that he will continue sponsoring the team.
The news, coming barely a week after assuring that he is ready to bankroll the team again in the Caf Champions League, is likely to cause a buzz of excitement in the Bullets camp which was uncertain about the future of the sponsorship.
Disclosing the news, the club’s vice general secretary Ibrahim Patel said Muluzi finally met the players, officials and trustees on Monday morning at his BCA Hill residence in Limbe where the affirmation was made.
“It was a very formal meeting and he was very relaxed...he appeared to be in very good mood. Basically he wanted to congratulate the team for reaching the last eight of the Caf Champions League as well as winning the Bakili Muluzi Super League (BMSL) championship which made him very proud,” Patel said.
He said the team also presented the BMSL Trophy to its sponsor.
“He then assured that he is not going to ditch the team reiterating that he would like the Bullets to become one of the best teams on the continent,” said Patel.
The Bullets official also said the former head of state commented for the first time on his K15 million ($138,888) sponsorship meant for five years, which has already been blown up.
“He said it was very unfortunate that the money was blown up. However, he asked the trustees to prepare a budget for next season.”
The Bullets vice general secretary said the trustees and officials took turns to apologise to Muluzi for blowing up the sponsorship.
Patel also said the Bullets have since submitted the financial report to their sponsor on how the K15 million was used.
“The sponsor said he is in receipt of the financial report but has not yet gone through it,” he said.
Muluzi is also reported to have told the trustees to sort out the issue of debts which the club owes to some companies and individuals like Kips Restaurant, S & K Furniture, Blockbuster Video and Sacranie Gow & Company.
