Nyamilandu orders another Fam audit

Newly elected Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president Walter Nyamilandu has ordered another audit to be carried out at the association, Nation Online has learnt.
Nyamilandu issued the order during his inaugural executive meeting which he chaired on Sunday to identify areas which need urgent attention.
The president said the audit report would give him direction on how best to manage the association funds, whether those from Fifa or other sponsors and well-wishers from within the country.
“I have called for an interim audit report to be carried out at Fam covering the period from January 1 to November 13 this year.
“The results will be published because we want the public to know what I am taking over, who owes us what and who we owe what,” said Nyamilandu in an interview yesterday.
He said the audit exercise will help instil confidence in sponsors.
But Nyamilandu said in an interview yesterday KPMG will still carry out another comprehensive audit at the association by the end of next month.
On the audit report which was carried out at the association last year and implicated former president John Zingale, former treasurer Hubert Mfune and former executive member and spokesperson George Kaudza Masina, Nyamilandu said he would work together with the DPP to bring the culprits to book.
In an interview, Fam general secretary Roosevelt Mpinganjira confirmed the order, saying the association has already started acting on it.
“Our auditors are KPMG but we have to get other auditors to do the exercise. Right now, we have started requesting for quotations from other auditing firms because different firms charge differently.
“We can’t say when the exercise will start because there are a number of things that have to be done such as finding the auditing firm,” said Mpinganjira.
The office of the Auditor General carried out the last audit exercise at Fam between September 17 to November last year, but the report was officially released by the National Sports Council in December.
After the release of the report, Sports Council referred the matter to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Ishmael Wadi, who in an interview on Wednesday said he would come back to us but never did until we went to press.
