Fifa fines Malawi K1.1 million
by: Oris Chimenya, 11/16/2004, 11:40:17 AM

Tough start. Newly elected Fam president Walter Nyamilandu stepped into the thick of things when it was announced that world soccer governing body Fifa has fined the association Swiss franc 12,000 ($10,555) soon after his election.
Fam general secretary Roosevelt Mpinganjira made the announcement at the Fam extraordinary meeting on Saturday, saying the fine is punishment for the ugly violent scenes which ensued after the October 9 World Cup and Africa Nations Cup match between Malawi and Tunisia.
The match ended 2-2 after the home side had taken a 2-0 lead. The visitors equalised in the dying minutes of the match.
“We are very happy that the elections are finally here. But we ask the incoming president to discuss ways of involving the government and other stakeholders so that hooliganism should be stamped out completely.
“Fifa has fined us 12,000 Swiss Franc for the violence that erupted after the Malawi/Tunisia game,” he said.
Mpinganjira said Fifa has given the association up to November 30 this year to pay the fine.
But he said Fifa is yet to make a determination on the Caf Champions League match between Bakili Bullets and Nigeria’s Enyimba which was also followed by violence. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The elections results for the Fam presidency were as follows: Walter Nyamilandu 69 votes, Hastings Kapenuka 27, Kelvin Mmangisa 7 while one vote was null and void.
Former Cosafa vice president Geoff Gondwe was disqualified for having no Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) which is a constitutional requirement for any executive member for Fam.
Two candidates, director of sports in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Bester Kalombo and sole Northern Region contestant Moses Mkandawire filled the two positions for executive members after getting 32 votes and 26 votes respectively.
