Fam presidency candidate Walter Nyamilandu was surprised on Tuesday when the association rejected his Bachelor of Social Science degree as an educational qualification for the post.
Nyamilandu, who was nominated by Southern Region Football League (SRFL) and Southern Region Football Association (SRFA), obtained the degree from the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College in 1995.
In an interview on Wednesday, Nyamilandu said he sent a representative from the SRFA Raphael Humba to go and present the degree to Fam, but was surprised when the soccer body rejected it.
“I have been informed that my degree was sent back yesterday [Tuesday] and that Fam want an MSCE (Malawi School Certificate of Education). I wonder why, because I think a degree is higher than an MSCE.
“Anyway, that is a small issue. I have already called my former school Blantyre Secondary (BSS) and they have told me that the MSCE is there. Maybe that’s how they interpret their constitution, but the way I understand it, MSCE is a minimum qualification,” said Nyamilandu.
Humba was also baffled.
“Why should somebody who is presenting a degree instead of an MSCE be sent back? Are they serious with the constitution?
“And at the last year’s elections in Mzuzu, Bester Kalombo presented his diploma and Fam never asked for his MSCE. Why this time?” asked Humba.
Fam executive member Joseph Mapwesera confirmed the issue in a separate interview.
“We are not against somebody’s degrees but we just want to see the MSCE because sometimes, people use their brothers’ certificates. Nobody is allowed to bring even a diploma in accountancy or anything, but an MSCE,” said Mapwesera.
Section 30.4 paragraph three of the Fam Constitution states that: “The executive committee members shall hold a minimum of MSCE or its equivalent and may be required to produce it before the returning officers of an election where his name is proposed”.
