Former Dowa East MP Nasser Kara who is awaiting execution at Maula prison after being convicted of murdering his driver has appealed against the conviction.
High Court and Supreme Court registrar Sylvester Kalembera in an interview on Wednesday confirmed that the former legislator filed a notice of appeal through his lawyers Lawson and Company.
He referred the reporter to Supreme Court registry for details. Officials at the registry said in a separate interview that Kara’s lawyers have appealed on eight grounds.
The lawyers are arguing that Judge Dial Kumange erred on several matters of the law and procedures during trial which they want the Supreme Court to look into.
Registry officials said the case is awaiting court records from the High Court in Lilongwe which was sitting in Nkhotakota and later in Salima.
Assistant High Court Registrar in Lilongwe Thom Ligowe confirmed the appeal but said he needed to check with the officers who were working on the file “if indeed the court records have not been sent to the supreme court in Blantyre”.
Kara who was convicted for murdering his driver Alex Mbewe was tried with two of his bodyguards Charles Kulemeka and Phillip Singo who were acquitted.
The former MP is currently at Maula prison.
Kara is also awaiting trial for another case where he is accused of killing his wife and her friend but the case will be tried after seven years according to the law because the two are currently presumed missing.
