As the countdown to the Fam extraordinary general meeting (EGM) slated for November 13 continues, one of the aspiring candidates for the post of president Walter Nyamilandu has already got two nominations from some Southern Region affiliates.
The race for the presidency has recently been joined by former sports minister Moses Dossi.
But Nyamilandu, who has so far been nominated by Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) and Southern Region Football League (SRFL), formerly Blantyre and Districts Football League (BDFL), said in an interview Sunday he is not intimidated with the coming in of the former minister.
“I am not intimidated. I am not moved at all. Actually, it just makes the whole thing interesting,” he said.
Nyamilandu, who served as MTL Wanderers general secretary and Flames defender, also said competition is necessary if quality is to be achieved.
“There has to be competition so that what comes out should be of good quality and I am personally happy that the former minister has joined the race,” he said.
Dossi told The Nation Friday that he does not think he has joined the race a bit late.
“I don’t think so because I have already set the ball rolling. I have been talking to affiliates in the South and next week [this week], I will be heading for the Central Region and finally, up North,” said Dossi.
SRFA chairman Raphael Humba, whose body was the first to nominate Nyamilandu, also welcomed Dossi’s enrty.
“Its very good that Dossi has joined the race. It will give the affiliates a good and wide choice, but people will vote according to the ability and character of the person,” he said.
Other candidates aspiring for the presidency are former Fam president Geoff Gondwe, former Fam executive member Hastings Kapenuka, former Fam treasurer Hubert Mfune, former Fam technical committee chair and former Bullets coach Kelvin M’mangisa and former soccer star Atlee Nkhonjera.
According to The Sunday Times, Fam will officially unveil the candidates this Friday.
