Barely a few days after declaring his interest to vie for Fam presidency, former sports minister Moses Dossi might find himself in a tight situation following the association’s constitutional requirement that every candidate for the executive committee must have been active in association football for five years.
Fam acting president Anderson Zimba made it crystal clear Sunday that should Dossi be nominated, the affiliate that will put forward his name will be asked to outline his involvement in football.
“Before he became minister, I knew Dossi as soccer commentator and I doubt if at all he has ever administered football before.
“Certainly there has to be proof that at one time he was active in association football for not less than five years otherwise he will be barred from contesting but as of now we are giving him a benefit of doubt,” said Zimba.
The former minister, who joined the race for the Fam hot seat last week, argued that having served as sports minister for five years is clear testimony that he has the experience of administering the game.
“I was minister responsible for sports for five years and football was part of my responsibilities.
“Wasn’t it me who was involved in negotiating for assistance from the English FA in form of equipment and so on? Didn’t the Chinese women national soccer team come here because of my influence...now what involvment are they talking about?” wondered Dossi.
He added: “My knowledge in administering the game of football cannot be over emphasised.”
However, Zimba countered: “The fact that he was a minister for a long time cannot be disputed, but how does he justify that being a sports minister is the same as active involvement in association football?”
Article 30 sub-section 3 of the Fam constitution states that: “Every candidate must have already been active in association football for a period not less than five years and must not have been found guilty of a criminal offence for the previous seven years.”
Zimba also said just like Dossi, the other candidates will also have to meet the requirements.
