An eight old boy who was burnt by a loose overhead power line in Blantyre died in the early hours of Sunday.
The remains of Clement Kaputeni were laid to rest later in the afternoon of Sunday in Machinjiri, Blantyre.
The late Kaputeni, a standard one pupil at Makalanga Primary School, met his fate on Wednesday last week after knocking off from school.
Escom spokesman Chikondi Chimala said Monday Escom met all the funeral expenses, including the cost of the coffin.
“We offered our assistance towards the funeral ceremony and the people were very cooperative and understanding,” said Chimala.
Chimala added that Escom will compensate the family for the untimely loss of little Clement.
“But if you ask me when are we compensating the family, I would say that is subject to consultation,” said Chimala.
Meanwhile, Civil Liberties Committee (Cilic) lawyers said Monday they are interested to help the family by instituting legal proceedings against Escom free of charge.
“We can still sue for loss of dependency and loss of expectation of life on behalf of the dependants of the deceased or the estate of the deceased,” said lawyer and chairman of Cilic Chimwemwe Kalua.
Kalua said they have decided to offer free services to the family should they be interested in the matter through pro bono services as requested by the Malawi Law Society for all lawyers to dedicate some hours of free legal services.
