Mponda, Caps finally agree
by: Garry Chirwa, 10/6/2004, 8:00:23 PM

Former Bakili Bullets captain Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda has finally done the paper work with Zimbabwe’s topnotch side Caps United where he has signed a one-year contract.
But that’s not all. The highly gifted defender has said he will negotiate for a free transfer with his former club, a move the Bullets described as out of question.
Mponda, who arrived in the country early this week from the sunshine city, Harare, said he is happy with what is on offer.
“Whatever people may say, I am happy with what Caps are offering me. It is a well setup side that is run very professionally and I am happy to be part of it.
“I am particularly happy because Caps is a gateway to more lucrative leagues in Europe, Middle East and even South Africa and I have been assured by Euro Club Services who are Caps’ agents that I will be going for trials in Belgium within the next six months,” said Mponda.
However, Mponda kept a tight lid on his perks, saying: “I would rather not talk about it now...all I can say is that I am satisfied.”
However, well placed sources disclosed that Caps’ director Twine Phiri, who is a business magnate, has offered Mponda a US $12,000 (about K1.3 million) signing on fee, a furnished flat, insurance cover and quite an attractive salary.
He also said what remains now is clearance from both his club and Fam.
“There was a verbal agreement before I left that I would be given a clearance and therefore join Caps for free and I hope there will be no sudden change of tune from other quarters,” said the skilled defender.
But Bullets’ vice general secretary Ibrahim Patel said there is no way the club can let a player of Mponda’s calibre go for free.
“We will give him the clearance, that’s no problem, but we will come up with a price tag for him which Caps has to pay. We have spent over K1 million on Peter and he cannot go for free.
“And according to Fam and Sulom Rules, a player is declared a free agent only if he stays for the entire season without playing active football,” said Patel.
Mponda said he will sort out the issue soon after Saturday’s joint World Cup and Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Namibia.
“For now I think my focus should be on the game, I will talk to Bullets immediately after the match,” he said.
