Former Flames manager joins Fam race

Former Flames team manager Martin James Luwanda has joined the race for executive posts at the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) following last week’s launch of candidate nomination exercise by the association’s affiliates.
A letter from Fam dated September 27, 2004 addressed to all its affiliates gives them the green light to start nominations for the posts of the body’s president and two executive members.
The elections will be held on November 13, 2004 after being delayed by government’s tight scrutiny of the amended Article 30.4 which governs the eligibility of people aspiring for the association’s executive posts.
Luwanda was the chairman for the Lilongwe and District Football League from 1983 to 1985 before he became the team manager for the national team from 1989 to 1991.
In an interview Monday, Luwanda said if voted into power, his main mission would be to improve on the transparency aspect and promote marketing and fund raising for the association.
“I have been idle for a long time and these bad reports from Fam are frustrating and I want to go and correct things at the body.
“I will use my skills and techniques which I have from the time I was in direct contact with football so that the body’s image is improved,” said Luwanda.
He also said if marketing was promoted at the association, the body would not be relying on funding from government because it would be raising almost enough finances for its operations.
Fam also stressed in the letter the need for the aspirants to have the required constitutional requirements to avoid the blunder made last year when the nominations and voting were done before the presentation of the requirements.
“May we also remind you to confirm that the candidate meet[s] all the constitutional requirements of the MSCE as a minimum qualification and also five years experience in association football. This is according to Article 30.4” reads the warning.
