House to summon Inspector General, TVM and MBC

In a drive to hold public institutions and officials accountable, the public appointments and declaration of assets committee of Parliament will be summoning the Inspector General of police, MBC and TVM, among them, after the current sitting of Parliament to ask them about their service to the tax payer.
A member of the committee said on Thursday that run on taxpayers’ money, but whose services upset the public, will be scrutinised and summoned to explain.
Inspector general of police Joseph Aironi has been reeling under pressure for sometime now from the civil society and other interest groups to step down due to alleged failure to manage the Malawi Police Service, accused of unprofessional conduct and political partisanship.
The two public broadcasters still continue to disappoint the public even after new Information Minister Ken Lipenga asked management of the institutions to open up.
“We will be meeting them after this sitting of Parliament. We want to hear them out; they should tell us their problems and difficulties that cause them to perform below public satisfaction,” said the source.
The source said the committee would make decisions based on the explanations it gets.
“People might think we want to dismiss the Inspector General, or management of MBC of Television Malawi or any other public institution we summon. This is not our intention. All we want is to ensure that people who pay tax get the best returns for their money,” said the source.
MBC public relations officer Edith Tsilizani said she was not aware of the committee’s intentions.
She, however, indicated the public broadcasters will comply with the committee’s demands when they come.
“On that issue I have consulted with senior management and I have not found anything of that sort. But if Parliament really wants to be doing that, that is not a problem. We will be willing to do that,” said Tsilizani.
She had no idea if MBC once appeared before the committee.
