Chambe man makes his case
by: Mclan Kanyang’wa, 8/31/2004, 10:42:26 AM

A herbalist who claims his Chambe drugs is a cure for HIV/Aids on Monday paraded for journalists in Blantyre four patients who testified on the effectiveness of his drug and he challenged government to bring terminally ill patients for further evidence.
George Liunde Kumbuyo, who accepted a National Aids Commission (Nac) proposal to go to South Africa on a fact-finding tour on the drug, said apart from selling the concoction, there are almost 40 clients who are at the moment taking chambe free of charge.
He added: “Although government has refuted giving out patients to the scheme, four people from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital are on the drug and all of them have been healed. They are free from the virus.”
The first to claim chambe is effective, Pierson Kabanga, an HIV/Aids patient on Anti Retro Viral (ARV) drug since last year, told the journalists that since he took two bottles of chambe his health has dramatically improved.
Kabanga challenged that he has been cured of the virus and that he is no longer bedridden.
The other patient, a civil servant who chose to remain anonymous, also on ARV, said he is a free man after taking the drug. He described the ARVs as an accident but dubbed chambe “a hand of God”.
There were also cancer patients, Andrew Muyaya and Rose Julius from Chileka who claimed they had been terminally ill. Both, who have not yet gone for testing, said they are feeling better from their chronic illnesses after taking the drug for only two weeks.
Kumbuyo challenged the government to bring critically ill patients for treatment so that the nation can know the truth about the drug.
“Some of those who have re-tested after the drug, results have proved negative. With secrecy surrounding HIV/Aids, it is becoming difficult to convince them to go public on the effectiveness of the drug. Nevertheless, people are free to come with a patient whom experts could research on” he said.
Kumbuyo said it was wrong for government to demand for the chemical composition of the drug he discovered as an individual.
Spokesman for the chambe healing scheme Hastings Katunga said the project has been failing to reach an agreement with the government because the government wants to know the chemical composition of the drug.
“Even if they handcuffed us or get us chained we would not tell them the chemical or biological composition of the drug. We are working on getting a patent for its discovery,” he said.
Kumbuyo said chambe does not only reduce Aids but wipes it out completely.
He claimed that there are some senior government officials who have connived with some journalists to discredit the chambe healing scheme.
Kumbuyo showed journalists supporting documents showing how the drug has worked on patients in South Africa and other documents showing that he registered the scheme in South Africa.
