An indisputable second-half match oversight earned MTL Wanderers on Saturday a 1-1 draw against the Reserve Bank side Silver Strikers in a soccer thriller staged at the Chichiri Stadium.
It was clear from the first whistle that the Nomads had all the chances of dictating the pace of the match because of the way the communications boys were displaying their classic talent against the Central Region soccer giants.
The nomads truly had the game in their hands but things went wrong in the second half when their game seemed to fall apart.
The MTL knights were totally divided. The midfield was in shambles. The striking force also lost coordination. It was only the defence sector where they seemed solid. The crew, led by strong pillar Benard Kalilani, saved two ‘obvious’ goals right in the box by Peter Wadabwa and McNeil Chitsundi.
Muzipasi Mwangonde’s 14-minute header opened the score board, but the bankers equalised through Coca-Cola tournament top goal poacher Peter Wadabwa.
The nomads lost many chances through Albert ‘Kika’ Mpinganjira. But the most regrettable one happened in the 70th minute by Moses Chavula, who courageously thwarted Mpinganjira.
The second half could have seen Wanderers conceding more goals had it not been for experienced defender Allan Kamanga and Benard Kalilani, who at times made effective overlapping runs upfront.
At the end of the match Wanderers coach Eddington Ng’onamo looked sad but comforted himself by saying: “We lost concentration. But anyway, that is what football is all about.”
Silver coach James Chilimampunga said: “My boys were divided in the first half, but they managed to equalise and that is not bad for an away game.”
The result brings the Lali Lubani Road boys points tally to 43 points and two games in hand while the bankers have only one game to go but have 46 points.
