Project fame grinding to a halt
by: Chisomo Kachapila, 8/20/2004, 3:38:47 PM

There is only one week left before Project Fame, M-Net’s reality show, draws to a close after grooming 16 wanna be’s towards music stardom and in the process, eliminating the bulk who didn’t impress.
Voters this week will choose to evict either Monica, Johan or Jonathan out of the house. The remaining survivors and hot contenders Lindiwe of Zambia and Tebogo (South Africa), together with Tracy-Lee (South Africa) and Dare (Nigeria) are all tipped for the title depending on whether or not they are voted for by viewers.
The show, however, has not gone without criticism. Singer Ben Michael, who failed to make it into the show, told Power 101 FM in an interview recently that he did not regret being let out of the academy because the students were not being encouraged to sing African beats.
And unlike it’s predecessor, Big Brother Africa, which was available for viewing on Television Malawi, Project Fame was only available for Multichoice subscribers, making the project less popular among Malawians.
At the beginning of the show, Endemol, the producers of the show, had hoped to attract 26 million voters and unearth some of Africa’s hidden talent..
“We hope to have folks glued to their screens,” said Marie Rosholt, Endemol Executive Producer.
According to the academy’s rules, the students are not allowed to sing music of their own choice. For example, in a recent interview, before his eviction, Steve from South Africa, a Jazz artist, expressed frustration at having been given songs which he couldn’t comfortably sing.
And Project Fame winds up after an eventful two months of learning and watching, with less romantic escapades than Big Brother probably because the stars were mostly occupied with learning.
The lucky star, who gets the most votes next Sunday, will walk away with a car and recording contract.
