Wadi gets confirmed as DPP
by: George Ntonya, 8/11/2004, 4:56:30 PM

It is not official but some members of the Public Appointments Committee of Parliament have said Ishmael Wadi has convinced the committee he is material for the position of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Wadi, who appeared before the committee on Tuesday afternoon for a lengthy interview, will replace Fahad Assani who President Bingu wa Mutharika dropped last month.
“We have done what people wanted. I am sure you know what they wanted,” said one of the members after the interview, saying official results will be announced by relevant authorities.
Committee chair Kate Kainja and her deputy Mark Katsonga were tight-lipped on the issue.
“I cannot speak now. Contact me tomorrow,” said Kainja as she walked out of Parliament building with Katsonga and other members.
Sporting a black suit with matching shoes and briefcase, Wadi got out of the interview room around 4.20PM after about one-and-a-half hours of selling himself.
“It is really difficult for me to speculate. I am not sure whether the answers I gave them satisfied them,” the ever smiling Wadi said when asked to comment on the mood during the interview and whether he felt he had done enough self-marketing.
“There were quite a lot of questions from almost all the members. Some of the questions have opened my mind on some crucial issues,” he added.
Wadi, whose appointment has not pleased some UDF members, intends to reorganise his chambers to make them more effective if he is confirmed, he said.
Government spokesman Ken Lipenga said on Tuesday, in reaction to news that Wadi has been confirmed, that a due process has taken place
“The President in his wisdom appointed this man because he thought he could do the job. The committee in its wisdom has agreed with the President. A democratic process has triumphed,” said Lipenga.
“Now it will be up to the new DPP to make sure that he lives up to the expectations of both the President and Public Appointments Committee. And from the look of things it seems he will be able to do that,” he added.
