It was a double celebration for the Taiwanese on Friday as organisers of the just-ended 16th Malawi International Trade Fair named the Taiwan stand as having the overall best display. Taiwan was also awarded a gold medal in the foreign exhibitors category.
This year, Taiwan was represented by three companies—Chieh Industrial Company Limited displaying motorcycle and automotive parts, Queen’s Machinery Company Limited and Venus Plastic Machinery Company Limited.
There were also three Malawi-based Taiwanese firms namely Chirimba Garments, Haps Clothing, Wing-Wing Garments and Tyre Bany, according to Wei-na Liu, commercial secretary at the Taiwanese embassy in Lilongwe.
Egypt and Kenya came second and third respectively in the foreign exhibitors category.
National Bank of Malawi won gold in the service provider category followed by Admarc on second place and PTC/McConnell Group who went away with silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the newly-introduced export category designed to complement government efforts to transform the economy from importing to production and exporting, Charles Stewart Day Old Chicks Limited scooped gold while Admarc won silver and Escom got bronze on third position.
The Tobacco Industry won gold in the industry category followed by Ken Steel Engineering and Dairibord Malawi Limited.
There were 200 local exhibitors and 16 foreign ones at this year’s trade fair.
