Republican Party (RP) president Gwanda Chakuamba, who was admitted to Wermaht Private Clinic in Blantyre last week for malaria, pneumonia and hypertension, is now on bed rest in South Africa.
RP national organising secretary Ian Nankhuni said on Thursday Chakuamba was advised by the hospital to rest and he decided to spend his time in South Africa.
“The president thought he would spend his bed rest better by going outside the country,” said Nankhuni.
He also said Chakuamba “decided to utilise his time” to visit Minister of Economic Planning and Development David Faiti, who has been admitted to a South African hospital.
Faiti is an RP member of Parliament and was given a ministerial post following his party’s coalition with the ruling UDF.
“Honourable Chakuamba will be returning home on Saturday but I can’t say as to when Honourable Faiti will be coming back,” said Nankhuni.
Media reports indicated last Friday that Chakuamba was rushed to hospital after complaining of chest pains and breathing difficulties.
A group of people thronged to the hospital in Blantyre to see the RP leader following his admission.
