The CCAP Blantyre Synod has written President Bingu wa Mutharika apologising to him over the conduct of two senior officials of its Church and Society Programme, who, last Thursday, called for support from members of Parliament for a motion to impeach the President.
In separate interviews on Monday, Synod general secretary Reverend Daniel Gunya and moderator Reverend Macdonald Kadawati also distanced their church from the “rude remarks” made by Executive Director Robson Chitengo and Director of Programmes Billy Mayaya against the President, indicating that the two face disciplinary action.
Gunya said Chitengo and Mayaya are not spokepersons for the synod and that their role is to work on advocacy and civic education programmes.
“We were not even served with the copies of the statement they wrote against the President,” said Gunya.
And Kadawati said in a separate interview the two officials will be summoned to face the board to explain their conduct.
“We want them to explain their agenda and we will decide on the way forward,” said Kadawati.
He said the synod has sent an apology to the President.
“There are naughty children in every family and this is just an example of that,” said Kadawati.
And in a press statement signed by Gunya, the synod said what the two officials wrote were “personal statements, not sanctioned by Church authorities”.
He said the synod “likewise any sane citizen” pledged to support the President and his government.
“Surely, no government is perfect but profoundly and proudly accepted by God for a performance of proper responsibilities in the best interest of the people,” said Gunya.
He said Biblical Israel kings such as David and Solomon had shortfalls but God raised them to fulfil a certain purpose and that once the head of state honourably takes the oath of servantship for his people “nobody can shut the door opened by God”.
“We sincerely regret and apologise to the public and His Excellency Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika for the rude remarks made by our two staff members,” said Gunya.
But Chitengo was unrepentant when contacted, saying “as far as we know we’re mandated to speak for the church and we were just doing that”.
Chitengo and Mayaya accused Mutharika of making a serious constitutional error by removing former DPP Fahad Assani before his contract ended.
