French jazz guitarist admires Malawi beat
By: Daniel Nyirenda
A French jazz guitarist Nicolas Gravion has said he is impressed with Malawi’s traditional music.
The 29-year- old soloist, on his first tour of the country, said this in an interview at French Cultural Centre in Blantyre on Saturday.
He was dishing out some jazz blues during interludes of the national secondary schools French drama festival.
He said he has met local traditional musicians such as Waliko Makhala, Tione Mwera and Moffat Kulimbe to seek “an African inspiration of traditional music”.
“I loved their music because. I think, it captures the roots of African music. It is very authentic,” said Gravion, who travelled with his dog from France.
He said he has performed in other southern African countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique.
During the performance, Gravion gave the patrons some jazz blues in Zambian Chinyanja and Creole of the Indian Ocean French island La Reunion.
He also performed some pieces in French.
