Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian has asked President Bingu wa Mutharika to change the bad system and policies of the ruling United Democratic Front.
In a statement made available to Nation Online signed by general secretary Reverend Daniel Gunya and moderator Reverend MacDonald Kadawati, the synod asked Mutharika to take stock of the language of UDF functionaries and campaign strategies and the beating up of church leaders with impunity; the arrogance of the UDF in failing to listen to wisdom; UDF’s lack of adherence to donors advice on social and economical policies.
“ We genuinely believed it was time for change so as to change this bad system and policies. Hence be assured your Excellency that we were not against you as a person but against this bad system of the party,” reads the statement in part.
The synod said it was disappointed that in spite of the church’s commitment to unite the opposition, they failed to unite thereby dividing the votes among themselves giving the UDF an upper hand in the elections.
“ The total combined votes for the opposition is 2 million compared to one million of the UDF. It is the two million who voted against you that you must take on board otherwise the road will be rough and horrible,” says the statement.
The church leaders assured wa Mutharika their support as he is the President of the country.
“Let us bury the differences of the recent past and forge a head with building the future of the country,” says the statement, adding that the President should lead the reconciliation process.
