One of the 15 Malawian police officers sent to help in the restoration of law and order in Liberia on a United Nations peace mission died recently in Ghana on his way home after being attacked by a high fever.
Superintendent Jerrings Simwaka of the Northern Region Police Headquarters died last week at Accra Military Hospital after Liberian hospitals failed to treat him.
Police publicist Willie Mwaluka confirmed on Tuesday in an interview that the late Simwaka died after he was caught with malaria in Liberia and that he died on the way home in Ghana.
“The late Superintendent Simwaka got an attack of malaria and was first taken to KFJ hospital in Monrovia in Liberia where he was treated and after the hospital authorities noted that he was not improving after a week, they recommended that he be repatriated to Malawi to receive treatment,” said Mwaluka.
He said Simwaka’s condition worsened on the way to Malawi and was taken to Accra Military Hospital where he died on March 27 and his body was flown back home last Saturday.
Simwaka was laid to rest at his home in the Northern Region district of Karonga over the weekend.
Mwaluka said the death of late Simwaka, “who was a young and energetic law enforcer” is a great loss not only to the Malawi Police Service but also to the country as a whole.
“We are deeply concerned with the untimely death of Superintendent Simwaka. He was dedicated to duty and committed to serving the people of his country. We shall miss his services as a police service greatly,” mourned Mwaluka.
Before the late Simwaka went to Liberia he was stationed at Northern Region Police Headquarters after he worked for a long time at the National Police Headquarters in the Research and Planning Unit as deputy director.
