Blantyre-based golfer, Charles Merrick on Sunday won the Toyota Malawi golf tournament played at the Blantyre Sports Club.
Merrick, playing with 13 handicaps, scored 38 points and received a DStv set—decoder and dish.
The tournament marked the official opening of the Toyota Malawi chip-in—a shelter that company has at Blantyre Sports Club built in appreciation for the relationship that it has with it.
In an interview, Toyota Malawi financial director Rosemary Mkandawire said the K2.5 million chip-in will serve as a reception area for the club during golf or any open business function.
“On behalf of Toyota Malawi, I thank all the players for coming to participate in this tournament today. I especially thank Abdul Mukaddam for allowing the golfers to play without paying any green fees,” said Mkandawire.
Merrick, beaming with happiness thanked the sponsors for promoting the sport.
“Your sponsorship reflects some good management and good corporate image for Toyota Malawi. I stand to declare here that I am ready to defend the position next year,” said Merrick, adding that the prizes were brilliant.
The prizes included a Coolmaster fridge, golf bags, an Aiwa hi-fi, DStv set and small wrapped parcels.
Merrick was seconded by Sope Kayira, a 9 handicap player who was counted out on 38 points again and got away with an Aiwa Hi-fi.
On position three was another 9 handicap player, Steven Chisale who got 37 points and received a fridge.
Nearest to the pin on the first hole was Merrick again while James Chikapa hit nearest to the pin on the 12th hole.
Longest drive on the 6th hole was Neil Nyirongo while longest drive on the 17 hole was Abdul Mahommed.
The one-day half million tournament was played on individual stableford format with 89 golfers from both Lilongwe and Blantyre.
