In a theatrical upshot, the world’s soccer governing body Fifa continues to push Fam this way and that. This time around Fifa has made a renewed directive to the association to hold fresh elections.
But both the association and Sports Council have described the latest development as confusing and have agreed to ask for clarification.
Fam spokesman McCollins Chibvunde confirmed that the association received a letter from Fifa last week to the effect that it should hold fresh elections and that for the time being those who were elected at the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held in Mzuzu in December last year should run the daily business of Fam.
“We are smelling a rat, we have a strong feeling that there are other misguided individuals who are sending wrong information to Fifa through letters otherwise we don’t understand why Fifa can make a sudden U-turn and direct that we should have fresh elections when the majority in the committee met constitutional requirements,” said Chibvunde.
He argued that if anything it is only the three vacant positions of president and two executive members that have to be filled.
“May be Fifa did not get full details of what actually transpired and we are in the process of finalising a document explaining all what happened so that they have a clear picture,” said Chibvunde.
He added: “From the look of things, it seems Fifa is doing all this because they think the association is being pushed around by Sports Council which is not the case.”
Sports Council’s boss George Jana also threw his full weight behind Fam, saying there is need for Fifa to clarify.
“Their (Fifa) letter is vague because they are only saying that there should be fresh elections. Do they mean that even those that met the requirements will also be affected? They need to clear the air before any further action is taken,” said Jana.
Sports Council early this year disqualified former Fam president Sameer Suleman, executive members Peter Chavula and Raphael Humba from their positions after they failed to present Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent as required in the association’s constitution.
