Mgwirizano Coalition has said it is not affected by the rift in People’s Progressive Movement (PPM), a party providing the runningmate position to the seven-party grouping.
But spokesperson Kholiwe Mkandawire blamed the confusion in PPM on party vice president Justin Malewezi’s failure to declare in good time his interest to run for the presidency.
“This rift could have been avoided had Malewezi been honest with himself and expressed his interests about the presidency of the coalition but he never did that and this is what has caused the problem. In any case, this rift is not affecting the coalition,” said Mkandawire.
Mkandawire disclosed that PPM second vice president Jimmy Koreia Mpatsa approached the coalition once, suggesting that Malewezi should lead the coalition but that was not well articulated and “he never came back to us”.
Mpatsa on Thursday declined to comment on the allegation by Mkandawire as well as on the factions that have emerged in the party.
“I am always hesitant to speak on camps, I always speak on what is right or wrong and I don’t think there are factions in the party. All we have are differences in opinion,” Mpatsa said.
Meanwhile, the party's hearing for Malewezi and Mpatsa has been postponed to Monday because party secretary general Knox Valera lost a brother-in-law.
On Wednesday this week the legal team found Malewezi and Mpatsa to have contravened the party's constitution by declaring themselves independent.
“Mr. Malewezi and Mr. Mpatsa by standing as independents, are standing in opposition to a candidate duly endorsed by the party,” Makoza said.
