MDC United who had a successful trip to Lilongwe last weekend, where they thumped Blue Eagles 3-0 and Mafco 4-1 in the K16.5 million Bakili Muluzi Super League (BMSL), will be gunning to add three more points when they engage Sammy’s United at Escom Ground on Sunday.
The Soccer Saints might be swimming under a pile of financial constraints following Malawi Development Corporation’s (MDC) sponsorship withdrawal but they are still alive and kicking. They are currently on sixth position with 13 points from 10 games and a win might take them a step or two up the ladder.
Team manager Simon Mkandawire on Friday described the fixture as sticky but said the Saints are looking forward to adding the rookies on their list of casualties.
“Our aspirations are to finish the league in the top three and even do better than that and for us to achieve that we certainly cannot afford to lose points to minnows like Sammy’s.
Mkandawire, however, stressed that it will not be a bed of roses for his team which will once again look up to blooming star Prince Chihana, Heston Munthali, Francis Cholimbira, Evance Lorenzo and Kondwani Gawani.
But Sammy’s are unpredictable, very fluky. Three weeks ago they held giants Bakili Bullets to a two-all draw and nearly put the defending champions to the sword. They have also beaten Moyale Barracks and Mafco along the way.
Chikaiko Bridge, Lumbani Munthali, Charles Kalaile, Kumbukani ‘Banya’ Lungu and Bauleni Masambelo should be on song for the new comers.
This afternoon Sammy’s who are on 12 position with eight points from eight games take on Super Escom at the same venue.
Escom, who are being coached by Stuart Mbolembole have had an impressive ride recently beating out-of-sorts MTL Wanderers 1-0, are itching to improve their standing on the log table. Apparently just like Sammy’s, Escom also have eight points from eight games but they have a better goal difference.
George Mlelemba, Greyson Phiri, Chimango Mpinganjira, Nzeru Saulo and Nafe Musasa should lead the onslaught for the electricians.
In other big matches, eighth-placed Admarc Tigers travel to Mzuzu to face Moyale and bottom of the table Mzadd at Mzuzu Stadium while Capital City giants Silver Strikers host Lower Shire snoozing giants Illovo at Silver Stadium on Sunday.
The bankers are on third position with 20 points from nine games. They have conceded the least number of goals in the 15-team flagship league—an enviable two goals only.
