The current executive chairman of Blantyre Printing and Publishing (BP&P;) Cassim Chilumpha is to be replaced following his appointment as Malawi’s new Minister of Privatisation Affairs.
One of the Directors of BP&P;, Jane Dzanjalimodzi said on Tuesday that it would not be possible for Chilumpha to be in two jobs at one time.
“What happens when one has got a new job? Can somebody have two jobs at once? It is obvious that the position must go to someone else,” Dzanjalimodzi said.
She could, however, not indicate when BP&P; would have a new executive chairman.
“It’s not a do or die situation. It’s not a crisis. Everything is under control. You will know our position in due course,” she said.
The removal of Chilumpha from BP&P; is likely to give publications like The Daily Times and Malawi News a new policy direction.
Meanwhile the Office of the President and Cabinet has said it has not yet set any date yet for the swearing in ceremony of Chilumpha, who has replaced vice President Justin Malewezi. Malwezi was replaced after he announced his resignation from the ruling United Democratic Front.
In an interview on Tuesday Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Alfred Upindi said although the date is yet to be set, there is no deadline in as far as the swearing in ceremony is concerned.
“But he cannot assume duties until he is sworn in,” Upindi said.
He was speaking amid speculation that Chilumpha, who is also UDF’s presidential running mate in the May elections, may turn down the appointment.
He declined to comment on the issue but said new Deputy SPC Bright Msaka could comment on the issue. Msaka himself said he did not have any details at hand while Chilumpha could not be reached for comment.,
