The battle for the K7 million ($66,037) winner’s fat purse in the K16.5 million Bakili Muluzi Super League (BMSL) gets off the ground this weekend with 11 games scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday.
The league’s governing body Super League of Malawi’s (Sulom) fixtures secretary Ernest Maganga said except for MDC United, all the other 14 teams will be in action this weekend.
“MDC asked to be exempted because they are still talking trying to sort out the issue of sponsorship but they have assured us that they will be ready to kick-off the league at least by next weekend,” said Maganga.
He also said registration of players is still underway but was optimistic that the exercise would be through by Friday.
“We have communicated with all the clubs that registration deadline is this coming Friday, we certainly can’t set the ball rolling without finalising registration,” said Maganga.
Defending champions Bakili Bullets, who have won the league for a record five consecutive times, take the first step in the new season when they face Admarc Tigers at the giant Chichiri Stadium on Saturday.
Last season’s runners-up MTL Wanderers travel to Mzuzu to face Moyale Barracks on Saturday and new kids on the block Mzadd Rangers on Sunday. Both games will be played at Mzuzu Stadium.
