MTL Wanderers enjoyed a double dose of good news at the weekend when they were voted the best team in the annual Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s (MBC) Entertainers of the Year Programme. Their veritable treasure Joseph Kamwendo was also voted player of the year.
It has taken them time, quite a long time to win the award which in the recent past was dominated by their sworn adversaries Bakili Bullets. It therefore felt good to see smiles on the faces of all those associated with the Lali Lubani Road boys at the prize presentation ceremony held at Le Meridien Mount Soche on Saturday.
The nomads amassed 2,310 votes beating the Bullets who had 1,900. Silver Strikers came third with 110 votes.
Wanderers’ vice general secretary Mike Butao said: “We deserved the awards, we were outstanding in many aspects like discipline, standard of play as well as achievements as a team.
“We had a very good set-up that helped us turn the corner and win the BP Top 8 which is the richest tournament and everybody knows we were robbed of the Carlsberg Cup in broad daylight. I want to assure the soccer fraternity this is just the beginning,” said Butao.
In the players’ category, Kamwendo, who throughout the year dazzled fans with his mesmerising skills, stood out as the best with 1,870 votes beating Bullets’ Robert ‘Baggio’ Ng’ambi who had 810 while Russian-based hitman Essau Kanyenda came third with 270 votes.
“I am very happy to win the award. It will encourage me to work even harder next year, I am very proud indeed,” said Kamwendo who was smartly dressed in a black suit.
Bullets’ consolation was their coach Gilbert Chirwa who was named coach of the year after amassing 750 votes beating nomads’ mentor Franco Ndawa, who came second with 570 votes while former Flames’ coach Alan Gillett came third with 280 votes.
Blantyre-based referee Mike Mambo was voted the best soccer whistleman with 800 votes. Hastings Ntuntha came second while Youngson Chilinda was third.
In netball, high-flying MTL Queens came tops with 920 votes, their gifted goal shooter Emma Mzagada was also voted the best netballer with 500 votes. And to add extra spice to an already hot mixture, their coach Edith Kaliati was named netball coach of the year after amassing 250 votes.
Admarc Tigresses came second with their centre Ruth Kaipa also coming second best netballer while Linda Magombo was third. Lilongwe-based Blue Eagles were voted third best team.
Griffin Saenda was voted the second best coach while Peace Chawinga came third.
In basketball, Kaikango Malange was voted the best basketballer of the year with 210 votes, Hope Chisamanga and Weruzani Chingota came second and third respectively.
With 450 votes, Falcons were voted the best team while Bricks and Mimbulu were voted second and third respectively.
In darts, Atany Kaipa was named the best player with Charles Katola as his runner-up while Palije Nyirenda was third. In the ladies category Getrude Palanjeta was named the best player, Mary Kanyumbu came second while Memory Chikankabe was third.
The darts list was prepared by the Darts Association of Malawi (Dam).
