by: Potiphar Mhango, 10/15/2003, 6:21:33 PM

Misheck Nyirenda from Chipasula Secondary School in Lilongwe on Sunday afternoon won the second series of the K60,000 Dilawo Memorial Chess Trophy staged at the Lilongwe Technical College [LTC].
Nyirenda proved too good for the other 41 chess players who graced the occasion by taking home a medal and K5,000.
Nyirenda won six games and drew two matches to go amass seven points.
The excited Nyirenda said afterwards that he owed his victory to hard work and divine intervention.
“I knew it was going to be tough and I intensified my training in order to come out tops which I have done. I owe all the success to hard work and divine intervention,” Nyirenda said.
Precious Chiwere came second and went back home with K3,000 while Henry Matewere scooped the third position and pocketed of K2,000.
Matewere had to win a tiebreaker against Leonard Sharra to settle for the position. Sharra pocketed K1,000 on fourth position.
Despite the absence of the winner of the first series Felix Khechi, the tournament was still exciting and seasoned players present included Ulemu Chiluzi and Malifapo Botomani.
The trophy is sponsored to the tune of K60,000 but the Lilongwe and Districts Chess League (LDCL) decided to split the competition into four series, each carrying K15,000 worth of cash prizes.
Chairman of LDCL Michael Mshali said playing regularly exposes players.
“Splitting the sponsorship money into four has helped the league in general because players are playing more regularly,” observed Mshali.
He hinted that the league is contemplating finding sponsorship for club tournaments, saying this would help further to develop the game within the LDCL.
