Kelly Ernst and Hafson Kamanga on Sunday afternoon won this year’s Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) Captain’s Prize golf tournament in a lively event that attracted about 76 participants.
It was, however, Natalie Lochart who stole the limelight by incredibly scoring a hole-in-one on hole 15. Lochart’s marvellous performance came in the wake of another wonderful show the previous day in which she was in the winning team of Rodger Mann and Montie Gaffar.
But for all her wonderful display on Sunday, Lochart had very little to say when asked by the outgoing LGC Captain Kevin Smith.
“I really do not know how I achieved this feat but possibly my club did the trick,” said Lochart after collecting her prize.
But it was Kamanga and Ernst who carried the day with 63 points. The duo was presented with a huge floating trophy donated by S.Y. Kim.
“On behalf of my playing partner, Ernst I would like to thank my boss, Mike Bowler for all the encouragement he gave me. Lastly I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful event,” said the smiling Kamanga.
Lincoln Bailey and his son Andrew came second with 40 points. The longest drive for ladies was won by O. Cho while the longest drive (open) went to Andrew Bailey. Nearest to the Pin award on hole 9 was won by R. Hay. Most golf award went to J. Sabeel and Z. Mohamed.
Making his last speech as of LGC captain, Smith said it was very encouraging that some golfers could actually achieve the hole-in-one feat. Smith emphasised that such golfers need very big encouragement.
“It is very pleasing to note that some golfers can manage this feat which is very much scarce. In other countries it can earn someone a very big reputation. Such wonderful golf needs to be encouraged at all times,” Smith told the golf fraternity.
