Government has approved budgets amounting to K8 million for national football and athletics coaches Alan Gillett and Elizabeth Olaba’s contracts respectively.
Sports minister Henderson Mabeti said recently that he met his finance colleague Friday Jumbe who approved Gillett’s K5 million budget for his two-year periodical contract as well as Olaba’s K3 million two-year contract.
“I had quite a fruitful meeting with Hon. Jumbe and he assured that government would release funding for the two coaches,” said Mabeti.
The sports minister assured at Olaba’s farewell party in July that his ministry would sit down to consider Athletics Association of Malawi’s request to fund Olaba’s contract.
Sports Council executive secretary George Jana confirmed on Wednesday that he had been informed verbally by the sports minister about the development.
“We have heard it from the minister but we are still waiting for officials documentation before we can contact Olaba to come back,” said Jana.
He also said Gillett’s funding has not yet been released by government.
“The reason why we gave Gillett the go ahead to come before getting the funding of his contract was because there was pressure to have him for the Cosafa Castle Cup finals. “But we are still talking with the officials from the Treasury on the issues,” said Jana.
