Kuche Kuche pulls surprises

It might not be an overstatement that you have never heard anything about Travellers Band, an acoustic group from Rumphi. But thanks to the Kuche Kuche Music Awards competition which exposed and took the group out of the doldrums to be among the three finalists to represent the Northern Region at the competition’s national finals.
Travellers Band was the only acoustic group at the first regional finals held at Mzuzu Stadium on Sunday. The competition drew 10 participants.
Davie Kampala and Moyale Sounds and Cool Vibrations were the other two groups that made it to the October 25 finals.
The winners went away with K25,000 cheques.
The bands were given 15 minutes on the stage and played two songs in a row.
Judgement was based on originality of the songs and clarity according to Sphiwe Banda who was master of ceremonies at the function.
Kuche Kuche Brands Manager Wangisani Mizedya said in an interview that he did not expect such a massive turn out.
“This is just beyond my expectation. Since it is just the first time for us to host such an event, the turn out has been very impressing,” said Mizedya.
The manager said objectives of such events are to promote the local music industry and provide entertainment to Kuche Kuche fans in Malawi.
A Kuche Kuche fan Madalitso Nyondo, however, expressed reservations with the way the show was organised, saying children of less than 18 years were seen loitering around the stadium.
He also said the competition started later than indicated.
The participating bands included Ghetto Souls, Masaka Band, Nyatwa Sounds of Zolozolo, Nyika Sounds, Burning Fire Band, Kategha Band and Twizza Band.
The Mzuzu show will be followed by others in Blantyre and Lilongwe.
