Writers group Malawi Pen, a member of International Pen, is running a short story writing competition for secondary schools in the country with prizes worth close to K100,000.
Malawi Pen chairman Alfred Msadala said in a statement, the competition whose aim is to promote writing among secondary school students, will be in two phases.
The first phase will involve a contest at individual school level in which three best short stories on any subject will be selected. Stories are expected to be 1,500 worlds long, written in English.
The second phase will involve the selection of winners. A panel of judges will choose finalists from the winning entries from each school. As a way of promoting writing among girls, their prizes are higher than what will be given to boys, said Msadala.
The first prize for the girls’ category is K20,000; the third will receive K15,000; the third will go away with K10,000 and there will be four consolation prizes of K3,000 each.
In the boys’ category, the first prize is K15,000; the second is K10,000; the third K8,000 and four consolation prizes of K2,000 each.
