The Toyota Malawi tennis tournament which was strictly for Lilongwe players only is now open to players from the other regions and today’s grand slam at Lilongwe Golf Club has no age limit, it has been learnt.
Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) head coach Thompson Mtengula said sponsorship has been raised from K30,000 to K50,000 and the tournament has attracted 68 players, 40 men and 28 women.
“It’s going to be an exciting event because most of the top players such as defending champion George Chisambo, winner of the recent BLM tournament Joseph Manong’a are taking part,” said Mtengula.
Mtengula also mentioned Julius Taulo, Haxon Methiwa and Henry Ntuta as some of the favourites who are likely going to upset the tables.
“The tournament will be played on a knock out basis both in singles and doubles. It is good that Toyota Malawi have made this year’s event open,” he said.
