Malawi has been elected to the Vice Presidency of the 58th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Malawi envoy to the UN in New York, Isaac Lamba said in an statement.
Lamba said the election means that the Malawi Mission will preside over the general debate of the Assembly and participate as an ex-officio member for setting the Assembly’s agenda.
Apart from the Assembly, Malawi has also been elected to the Executive Board of Unicef for two years as well as to the Bureau of the Fourth Committee of the General Assembly.
Lamba said following Malawi's vigorous participation in UN activities—last year Malawi got elected into the boards of the UN Habitat and World Food Programme in which it still serves todate—it has not surprised many that at the forthcoming GA, Malawi has this year been assigned Seat No. 1 in the Plenary Hall.
