by: Francis Tayanjah-Phiri, 8/25/2003, 5:52:07 PM

Acquisition of insurance in the North was made complete with the launch on Friday of a debut office for NICO Life, anticipated to enhance all life insurance transactions for people of Mzuzu and the entire Northern Region.
Nico Life Insurance, a subsidiary of Nico Holdings, brings to Mzuzu all types of insurance cover centring on life to complement the existing general insurance transactions by its sister company, NICO General.
“We, as Nico, would like to be part of the economic development of Mzuzu city and we felt we have to complement our already existing property and operations by opening a fully fledged NICO Life insurance office. We believe the opening of this office will serve better not only people of Mzuzu, but the entire Northern Region,” said Felix Mlusu, managing director for Nico Holdings, a mother company for Nico Life Insurance Company.
Mlusu said he was optimistic that the new office would grow alongside the developing city of Mzuzu and shortly require expansion of offices. He said he believed that Mzuzu and the Northern Region had a significant potential of growth in its insurance requirements.
In the city, Nico Holdings also boasts of a good representation in its baby-companies of Nico General and New Building Society.
Mzuzu Deputy Mayor Ancent Nkhata hailed the establishment of the new offices, saying it would end the problems many of the city’s citizens faced in acquiring life policies.
Said Nkhata; “The coming of this company is a very big event for the City of Mzuzu and to us as an Assembly it signifies the rapid growth of the city. Let me promise you that as a city we would do everything possible to ensure that you grow your wings here, and we anticipate that shortly you would require a plot for spacious offices for Nico Life. We are ready to assist.”
As a token for social responsibility, the company donated K250,000 towards the construction of a bus shelter near the popular Taifa market.
Nico Life General Manager, Stain Singo said the company felt that by having such a bus shelter at a place like the Taifa market, congestion would be eased and similarly having such a bus shelter at a place like the Taifa market would protect many lives from traffic accidents.
In an interview, councillor for the area, Goodwin Mvula, hailed Nico Life for the bus shelter, urging many companies in the city to emulate the example and assist in the welfare of the city’s residents.
“Companies have a big role to play in the development of our city and, bearing in mind that they are our social partners, we expect them to contribute the same way Nico Life has done,” said Mvula.
