A community day secondary school teacher who was entrusted with school money in Chiradzulu has been arrested on suspicion that he squandered the money and cooked up a story that thieves broke into his house and stole it.
Limbikani Jali, 33, from Mkolimbo Village in Traditional Authority Kadewere in the district, is expected to appear in court shortly on a theft charge.
Kelvin Maigwa, an officer at police headquarters in Lilongwe, said yesterday Jali was entrusted with K50,000 for development projects at Msoni Community Day Secondary School but allegedly used part of it on personal needs.
“He reported to Namitambo Police Unit that thieves had broken into his house and stole the money but [police] investigations revealed that no theft took place at his house,” Maigwa said, adding that Jali’s wife told the police her husband cooked up the story about the theft.
“We have recovered K25,255 which will tendered in court as exhibit.”
The police arrested Jali on Sunday, July 27.
