Sports to fight Aids

World Vision International Malawi says it is committed to assisting government in eradicating the deadly HIV/Aids pandemic in the country by encouraging sporting activities among school children.
Programme manager for Mphuka Area Development Programme (Madep) in Thyolo Willie Kalumula said this recently at Njale Primary School in the district when he presented sports tournament trophy worth K200,000 to Milongera Primary School.
“WVI considers the burden school children encounter during their studies, most of them even fail to proceed with their studies because they habitually take alcoholic drinks and indulge in promiscuity, hence the need to increase school attendants by motivating them through sporting activities,” said Kalumula.
Fifteen schools competed for the trophy and received footballs while others received wristwatches and uniforms.
Speaking during the same function, District Education Manager Sam Kalanda thanked WVI for coming up with the idea of promoting sports for school children in the country.
“You know most of the children indulge in smoking chamba, promiscuity or early marriages because they have nothing to do after knocking off from school,” said Kalanda.
