Armed robbers on Sunday stormed PTC II shop in the lakeshore district of Mangochi, locked up workers and made away with about K317,791 cash and assorted groceries.
Sub Inspector John Namalenga of police public relations office said three people, one of them carrying a gun, stormed the shop, along the Mangochi-Monkey Bay road around 7PM and demanded money.
“According to a report that we have the shop was supposed to close at around 7 o’clock in the evening so the staff began balancing that day’s sales at around 6:40. The assistant manager of the shop Christopher Mwalure went to the bulkstore where they keep the cash box but when he was returning, he was attacked by three men,” he said.
Namalenga said the three people manning the shop that time, including a watchman, were locked in and taken to the back of the shop. They were told not to shout for help.
He also said there were only two shoppers at the time of the robbery and they were ordered to lie down on their bellies.
Namalenga said police are investigating the matter and no arrests have been made so far.
When contacted yesterday PTC officials could not comment, saying the only person mandated to do so is group general manager Jerry Buyskes who is on leave.
Last July, the shop was robbed of goods worth K40,000 and one person was killed during the robbery.
