The countdown to the exclusively African showpiece, Big Brother Africa show, which kicks off on May 25, seems to be heating up. Two psychologists from South Africa jet into the country this week to interview the ideal housemate from Malawi on April 9, according to Multichoice.
Local candidates to the show were interviewed for the short-listing process three weeks ago and now a final decision on who goes into the house will be made after the April 9 interviews, said Multichoice Sales and Marketing Manager Titania Kaunda in an interview this week.
For the first time in the history of the phenomenal reality show, 12 housemates from 12 different countries, including Malawi will share the Big Brother House competing for a US$100 000 (approximately K10 million) cash prize.
Kaunda said currently Big Brother Africa has enlisted the expertise of continentally-acclaimed academic and author Professor Kole Omotoso to advise on cultural dynamics bound to govern content emanating from the house.
According to Kaunda, FM 101 DJ C.O.D.E has been identified to interview Omotoso every week in the run up to the show. His first interview with Omotoso will be live on air on April 9 at 2 pm.
Bib Brother web site said Omotoso’s task as cultural advisor is to check on the authenticity of the Big Brother Africa candidates, seeking originality so that the show ends up with unique and interesting individuals who are not ambassadorial. The Big Brother selection teams are currently crisscrossing the 12 countries in search of potential candidates.
Their short-list will then be presented to the professor, whom together with M-Net & Endemol, will look at each individual and evaluate regional, colonial, tribal or urban influences behind that persona.
“Further, he will advise on the authenticity of each candidate based on geographic, political and economic background,” said the web site. “In addition he will oversee and add valuable input to the creation of Big Brother Africa tasks, making sure that they are relevant to both housemates and continent audiences.”
The web site added that most of Omotoso’s work has put emphasis on creating links throughout Africa, and he sees Big Brother Africa as an ideal entertainment platform for linking Africa together.
